track Oghena Solamame by the Honorable Vincent Ugabi off a Vin and Dave
release Agenebode

Agenebode is the town where Mr. Ugabi is based.
I was told this record was released to celebrate his recent conversion
at the time to a brand of Christianity that believed among other things
that you could pray to God the same ways the angel in heaven could. It
is one of my favorite African record covers and songs.

The Honorable Vincent Ugabi was one of the great Etsakor singers in
Nigeria in the 1970's. He did several LP's on major record labels like
Decca, EMI, Akpola, and many other smaller indigenous labels, including
the legendary Ijebor and Kabakar labels.

I had a chance to correspond with Mr. Ugabi recently and this is what he told me about his career

My
name is High Chief Hon Vincent Ugabi, the ambassador of Etsako
Musicians (born 20 September 1940), from Edo state who is based in
Agenebode. I am a Nigerian high life singer, songwriter and
multi-instrumentalist. I am known professionally as Honorable Vincent
Ugabi.

I am regarded as one of the first African traditional
High life musicians to gain international success and have been called
one of the most influential Etaskor musicians of all time. My music
represents spirituality, life and soul and is inspired by the lives,
parables, stories and historical details of my culture. My kind of
music is the kind that bring life to the dead and hope to the hopeless

I
have more than 30 LP's to my credit. All of these records helped to
define what became known as the Etsako/Weppa Wanno sound. The Etaskor
sound was one of the most creative and meditative forms of highlife
music in Nigeria during this time. Many of the most of important
releases appeared on the legendary Ijebor records label in the mid 70's
and early 80's.

I did not start out as a musician. I was a
photographer, tailor and hair stylist before I settled down with music
in my early 30s. I realized music was my true calling after my father
died in 1971. I was based in Lagos when I finally decided to focus on
music. I recorded my first two LP's in 1971 and 1975 respectively.

My
community was impressed by my recordings and live performances. I got a
lot of positive responses and support from them and they invited me to
relocate back home which is in the Weppa Wanno region of Nigeria in
1977, where I launched a very successful career. I performed under my
own name and was also the lead singer for the Weppa Wanno Sound band.

In
the 1990's a fire destroyed a lot of the records I had recorded.
Recently a group of record collectors helped me regain some access to
these recordings when they shared the recordings they had made of my
records.

While I was devastated by what was lost in the fire the
support of my fans has always supported me through the hard seasons of
life and helped me maintain my creativity and consistency as a
performer.

The track is a great example of the energy and
beauty in the call and response style of Etaskor music. Mr. Ugabi
hypnotic vocals are backed by a rapturous chorus and a stellar psych guitar
section that add flow, depth, poignancy and urgency to the sound.

At
once meditative and introspective the music ebbs and flows and you have
no choice but get drawn into the dialogue and all you want to do is
sway and dance to the rhythmic beat and the truth it expresses. A great
example of what makes the Etsakor sound one of the great musical
treasures of Nigeria.

As an added bonus to the track I have added a
link to a Facebook concert Mr. Ugabi and his sons recently did. This
is the first live online performance by the artist that I know of. Mr.
Ugabi is trying to raise some money to build a home studio to preserve
his work and the Etaskor sound.

If you like the music and would
like to contribute here is a link to the Gofundme site we have setup.
It has some more information on what Mr. Ugabi's musical discography
and what he's like to do with the home studio.

If you can make a
contribution that would be great, but we'd also appreciate if you could
share the link and this blog space on your social media accounts so we
can try to get other people involved with the project and his music.

gofundme.com/f/recording-studio-honorable-vincent-ugabi - you can cut and paste the link.

Mr. Ugabi has a facebook page and an Instragram account ugabivicent official.

I hope you enjoy the music.

Ubulujaja

<iframe

For the next selection on the highlife turntable, I have selected the song onoeshimegba omuvue by Kelly Udeji and his Okpilla Group.

There was no information about the band, but the Iroube label was one of the smaller labels operating in the Etaskor region in the 80's. I really like the deep hypnotic repetitive energy of the music and vocals, especially the interplay between the lead singer and the chorus. The chorus really stands out as it answers the call and response of the lead vocalist. Simple, elegant, meaningful, urgent the music conveys everything that makes Etaskor music so beautiful. Check out the flute playing towards the middle of the song. Reminds me a little of the sound of the Hon. Vincent Ugabi.

I hope you like it

For the next selection on the highlife turntable, I have selected the track Seikirimelemor by Prince. A.E. Amgbaduba and his Benrivs Dance Band off a Gabea record release.

I have never heard of the label and I believe its probably one of his rarest recordings. I got this LP from Chris Meserve during one of my visits to his house in New York. He gave it to me as a parting gift after one of our music listening sessions.

I received a message from Bestman Peres Doupere that this is actually an Ijaw song! He told me IK Belemu and many others used the term Seikinlade and the word itself means "Here comes dance" or dancing time.

He went on to say: The artist name is Emmanuel Amgbaduba. Amgbaduba is an Ijaw name that means big cheeks or literally big mouth. He also said he thinks Amgbaduba may have passed away in the 80's and that he was into music in the 60's before King Robert Ebizimor, Bestman Doupere, IK Belemu and many others. He started out playing native songs with african native drums before crossing to using english instruments for highlife music.

This makes sense as I have a 45 of his music from the mid 70's and another Ijaw player Lord Adusa played Asiko music back in the 60's before switching over to highlife.

I'd rank the beauty of his vocals and originality of his music along side other greats like Obiajulum and Mmadu Osa.

This song is one of my all time favorites. Check out the dreamy opening with its pulsating rhythms and the easy going introspective, almost philosophical, cadence of the vocals and the languid way they fades in and out of the song along side the chorus.

I tease my friends this is the song I want them to play at my wake because it says everything I ever wanted to say to them and everything they needed to know.

I hope you like it
For the next selection on the highlife turntable I have selected the track Wanle Wanle Akpo by Pere Tony Ombolo and the night rockers international band of Kabeama.

Intimate and Hypnotic, the Izon song meanders over 14 minutes. The languid vocals are accompanied by a steady percussion section that paces the song with an occasional synth flourish provided by the keyboards and guitars. It may not have flourish or pace of an Ebizimor or Belemu song, but the drumming and vocals create a intimate spacey dialogue that I find soothing.
I hope you like it
For the next selection on the highlife turntable I have selected the track Dau Gbanagha Tubou by Golipat and his Dynamites Band of Ayakoromo.

The song comes off a Golipat Records release from 1991. I do not know much about the band, but Ayakoromo is a town in the Delta States and the track is an Owigiri Ijaw tune. Peres Bestman Doupere did provide this information on the lead singer of the group:

<span style="color: #1c1e21; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Patrick Egoli is a well known musician among the Ijaws in Delta and Bayelsa States. In his active or hay days in the 80s and early 90s,he was the main back up or duet singer to late Professor I K Belemu. He is still much alive. His younger brother,Eniye Egoli is the main bass guitarist with the late King Robert Ebizimor's band.

The sound is reminiscent of I.K. Belumu soun. The song is free flowing and open with an extended dialogue being created by the interplay between the vocals and a propulsive rhythm section.

Relaxing, philosophical and introspective the song is a really nice of example of what an Izon song done right sounds like. I hope you like it.
For the next selection of the highlifeturntable I have selected the track Emele-Ogbo by President Rufus Ayafor off his release Rufus A.

I do not know much about about the perfomer except his is an Ijaw performer from the town of Norgbene in the Baylesa State. I have always liked his sound and have tried to collect anything I could find by him.

The way his ethereal vocals float along the spacey guitar lines are what stand out for me in the song. Their is a warmth and ease to his singing that I really groove on. I find myself drawn in and relaxed during the course of the song as his vocals interweaves with the chorus and you just feel like whatever he is saying really speaks to the soul

Please let me know if you know anything more about this performer.
I hope you like the music

For the next selection on the highlifeturntable I have selected the track Iwe Adimma by Obiajulum Sound Power led by Pat Enebeli.

I have written about Obiajulum before. He was active in the late 70's through mid 80's. I have seen his name translated to be contented heart or more descriptively by Ikon Afrik as my heart is at peace and joyful. The liner notes announce on this LP that they are changing their name from Ikwete Super to Obiajulum.

I first heard a track from this Yamson release on the blog hosted by Superfly Records in Paris in 2016 and have been looking for the LP ever since. It was worth the effort to find it.

Its really hard to describe how good this music is. The guitar playing and vocals are impeccable from a Ukwauni point of view. Check out the riffs at the 2 minute mark and around the 4.45 mark. Just beautiful. I have also included a link to the link at Superfly.
I hope you like it.
For the next selection on the highlife turntable I have selected the track Udianorakhara by Ugbo and his philosophers dance band.

I am not a big Edo music fan, but the first great African song I remember listening to when I first started collecting was Iyesogie by the great Edo performer Ugbo. The cadence of the vocals and the downtempo effect of the music just killed me and showed me there could be a complexity and depth to African music that I never imagined.

As I moved onto to other forms of highlife I still collected music by Ugbo, but nothing rivaled Iyesogie until I came across this song. It is a slow ballad. The pace/cadence of the vocals and the way they play against the stripped down music really give this song its heart and soul. One can really hear the sense of introspection and lament in the song. I think it is quite beautiful and reminds me of what attracted me to Edo music in the first place. I hope you like it
For the next selection on the highlife truntable, I have selected the track Sali Egwu Ye by Gentleman Ikechukwu Izuegbu and His Rhythm Masters of Nigeria off the Isabros release River Adolfi Ossissa

The lead singer is an interesting guy. I first came across him as the lead singer and composer for the band Mmadu Osa. Called the Spokesman he was said to be the voice of millions. They did several releases on the Izuson label. He also did a series of records with the Rhythm brothers under his real name Ike Izuegu.

While there are some Mmadu Osa songs I could not live without, I have found his LP's with the Rhythm Brothers to be a more complete expression of his music and the beauty and simplicity of his vocals. Chronologically I am not sure if the Rhythm Brothers came before, after or during his time with Mmadu Osa. But there is an authenticity in the way he sings that is captivating at a spiritual level.

I posted one of the best Mmadu Osa tracks on this blog earlier. The other good thing about both groups is they published the full text of their lyrics in their native language on the back cover of their LP's. Immensely useful.

The song showcases his vocals. Starting out with a little guitar riff, his vocals come in and guide the music through the rest of the song as the percussion and sparkling guitar solos play off the soft cadence of his vocal. I find it truly beautiful. Simple yet meaningful.

If anyone wants to take a crack and translating the song into English I'd be glad to send the song. I am not sure what language it is in but the first sentence is Ewo biko Oke nkem, Ikechukwu bia o ebele m mer bia nwam.

I hope you like the music
For the next selection on the highlife turntable I have selected the track Kekaji Okwu Me by Bob Fred off the 1989 Muzivision release Ezi-Oyo Special

I have posted other tracks by Bob Fred. One of the stalwarts of the Ukwauni highlife scene he played guitar on the seminal Rogana Ottah recording Ukwauni Special released in 1976 and had a long and prolific career as a sideman and leader.

Laid back but poignant, the song opens with a nice muted horn solo and then the interplay between the drowsy vocals and down tempo guitar lines propel the song forward as it meanders over 8 1/2 minutes. There are several nice stretches. Listen to the cadence of Bob Fred's voice and the way the horns really accentuate the flow of the song.

What makes this recording interesting to me is the rhythm and warmth of Ukwauni music is still fresh and emotive even 13 years down the line. Its a tribute to Bob Fred's mastery of the form
For the next selection on the highlife turntable I have selected the track Twamo-Esai by Lord Adusa Y Ayegbe off a 1977 release Izon Ene Ebi Ede.

I have written about Lord Adusa before. His 1980's release Mabena Otu is one of my all time favorite records. What was exciting about this release is that it was done in 1975 and it has some information on the artist. The liner notes say:

"The well known Ijaw philosopher, Lord Adusa started playing music at the age of 14, when the so called Asiko was existing far back in 1958. During that period he was to appear in public shows, leading a band called the Young Stars Dance Band "isampuo" After a long struggle he decided to change to another business for lack of instruments to perform on stage in a high temple."

Fast forward to 1977 and Lord Adusa releases this LP. He would have been 33 at the time of this release and his music is considered Ijaw highlife, which would have made him a contemporary of such first generation Izon perfomers like King Ebizimor and I.K. Belemu.

The song is basically an interplay between the spacey guitar lines and the plaintiveness of the vocals, which includes a flawless call and response between Lord Adusa and his chorus. It is a short song, but a good early example of the philosophical power of Izon vocals. This power would be the foundation on to which the Izon Highlife movements would be built in the 80's and 90's.

I found the lyrical quality of the song haunting. I hope you like it.

For the next selection on the highlife turntable, I have selected the track Izon Tuo Wuru Ebi Dou Ogbo of Endoro by King Robert Ebizimor off an IWA release Arekedoumene Part II

I found this synopsis by the music analyst and critic, Ogbonna Amadi:

"In the early 80's, Ebizimor and other gifted stars of Ijaw origin like Professor I.K. Belemu, Master Pereama Freetown and the White Eagle brought back highlife nicknamed Owigiri in a different sytle and from dominating the instrumentation with the vibrant guitars and exciting Rhythms which were missing in the early 60's and 70's.

As a born philosopher, his songs conjured images. They were like themes which give root to varying development and movement. The Agaibrir musical king created issues out of themes and provoked the thought of his audience to the point of inspiring and even mobilizing them to action, but the greatest weapon is his voice which he projected with happiness and enthusiasm"

Bestman Doupere Junior had told me roughly the same thing and added that Ebimizor's music was more philosophical and Belemu's music had more of a dancehall approach. Ebizimor's band were also training ground for other great performers like Bestman Doupere, Anthony Cockson and Barrister Young. I also found that Ebizimor started out in the Professional Seagulls band.

Personally, I have always been drawn more to I.K. Belemu's music with its infectious rhythms and uptempo vocals, but this track by Ebizimor caught my ear.

I think the rough translation of the title is something like Izon conceals the good and fertile lands of Endoro. The vocals dominate the song and have a coolness to them that mixes the authenticity of his sound and message with a down tempo guitar and drum beat. I like the way his voice carries the tune and the call and response he has with the chorus. Whatever they are singing about you can feel the wisdom and truth of what they are saying. I have been listening to it a lot lately. Very meditative.

I hope you like it
For the next selection on the highlifeturntable I have selected the tracks You get money help your brother and Iro Owa off a Sinco release Igbule Nwenne Gi Nu Nye Yowu by Garden City Band led by Prince Amadi

The record is from 1982 and the band was based in Port Harcourt. Port Harcourt was known for its gardens and recreational areas and was sometimes called the Garden City. There appears to have been a thriving music scene and there is mention of an Ambassador hotel that hosted many bands.

The style of music is called Ikwere highlife. The tunes are pretty straightforward but the crisp vocals and the trance sound of the bassline provide a relaxing contrast. Simple, but substantial. I got the record a few days ago and have been listening to it alot.

I decided to post two tracks because I think they go well together and showcase what I find appealing about the music. Check out the way the synthesizers bend the guitar notes on both tracks. Very psychedelic.

I hope you like the music.
For the next selection on the highlife turntable I have chosen a medley by Sir Lucky Ken K and his Sico International Band of Nigeria off an Adeoti records release titled: Keme Don Baikiye Otuo

One of the greatest pleasures of collecting is when you discover something unexpected. I almost passed on this record, but decided to buy to try something new. I was not disappointed! The three songs in the Medley (Keme-Don Baikiye Otuo, SeiYeovio barasin, igbasolo okpo) mesh together seamlessly propelled by the pulsating lyrics of Sir Lucky Ken K on a bed of cosmic fuzzy african psych. It is hard to describe all the beautiful parts of the song, but listen to the energetic cadence and flow. In my opinion it is as fluid and free a song as you will ever hear as far Izon highlife goes. A true exposition. No information on the liner notes but style points for the cover design.

I hope you like it.

For the next selection on the highlife turntable, I have selected the track Late Madam Kofi Feborke of Peretoru by the singer Pereama Freetown off an Egos record release.

Pereama was an Ijaw musician and a contemporary of King Ebizimor's and appears to have had a long career. Most of the music I have been able to find has been from the late 80's to the mid 90's. The liner notes on these LP's revealed nothing. He has a Facebook page, but there have been no postings since late 2014. There were also a few links to a news article dated Nov 2015 that detail the fact he was kidnapped from a wake he was performing at, but no word on what happened after that.

For me the cadence and pacing of the vocals and way the song conveys a sense of lament and introspection about the passing of the late madam Feborke stands out. The tight percussion and fuzzy guitar lines add to the down tempo ambiance. As far as praise songs go it is a laid back tune that is very soothing and soulful. The conventional wisdom has always been that golden age of highlife passed by the 90's, but Izon highlife like this proves there was still quality music being produced.

See what you think.

I hope you like it
For the next selection on the highlifeturntable I have selected the tracks Ofurogha Part II, by Bestman Doupere and his Coastal Pioneers off an Odec release of the same name.

Bestman Doupere passed away recently and I have been listening to a lot of his music lately. This tune does a nice job of highlighting the warmth and urgency of his vocals and how down tempo Izon Highlife could be. The song is an 15 minute jam focusing on his vocals and the rhythm guitar playing of A.S Eseduwo.

The rest of the band is listed: Headman Kingdom on Lead tenor guitar, Jonathan Dickson on Bass and Maracass, Torogbene Gbode on Drums, Oviyaibo Ombu on Congas, and Sunny F on Bass drum programming, A.S. Eseduwo and Torogbene Gbode are also listed as being in the chorus

Its a very downtempo song, but I found the pace and the guitar playing very hypnotic and reflective. Its good music to kick back and relax to. I hope you like it.

For the next selection on the highlife turntable I have selected the track Asonio Ere by Newman Zinck and his Menesougha Dance band of Angalabiri.

I did not know anything about the band when I saw the record, but I recognized Anthony Cockson's face underneath the tattered cover and knew that Angalabiri was a town somewhere in the Ijaw region of Nigeria. Angalabiri is one of a cluster of towns close to the Tarakiri-Ogbesu shrine on the banks of the Forcados river, the deity itself being integral to the culture of the Tarakiri peoples. It turns out King Ebizimor was also from Angalabiri.

I believe the song is a praise song to a woman named Madam Esomo-Ere. On the back cover the song is listed as Late Madam Esomo Ere while on the record the track is listed as Asonio Ere. For me the languid vocals stand out and the way the fuzzy guitar lines complement the flow of the song is flawless. It is a very nice example of the beauty of Izon music and I thought I'd share it.
For the next selection on the Highlife Turntable I have selected the track Ezifinite Special by the band Igwilo Igwilo and the Rainbow off a Foss Sound release from the early 80's.

There was no information on the band, but Aguata is a local government area in the Anambra state and Ezifinite is a town in the district.

The song is simple, but I found it relaxing. The vocals are unhurried and the lead singer creates a nice dialogue as he moves through the song cajoling and singing to the audience. The guitar work and muted horn playing add to the laid back ambiance of the whole song. Not usually my style but this track caught my ear.

For the next selection on the highlife turntable, I have selected the track Okubo Izom Ke Emi by Anthony Cockson off a Julie Records release dated 1988.

John Beadle has written about this artist before, but he did not have a lot of information other than he was an Ijaw musician from Tarakiri in the Bayelsa State who had an oddly poetic voice and a hypnotic bass line.

His name came across my musical radar when I asked Peres Bestman Doupere, the son of the singer Bestman Doupere, who the people were in some pictures I found on the back cover of a King Ebizimor LP.

He identified one as his father and the other one as Antony Cockson. He told me that Ebizimor, his father and Cockson were all from the Angalabiri Community in Sagbama. Both men were backup singers in Ebizimor's band before going off on their own solo careers. It also appears that Cockson had his own record label called Cockson records.

It took me a while to find this LP, but it was worth the wait. The song is a 16 minutes long and the vocals and bass line are complimented by some nice percussion work. John was right about the vocals and the bass line.

There are several points in the song where Cockson just goes off and does some really pretty cool singing. You'll know what I am talking about when you hear it.

I've been listening to this a lot lately and it has peaked my interest in Izon highlife.

For the next selection on the highlifeturntable, I have selected the track Anam Ene Uwa by the group Ogbansiegbe Onuora and his Star Brothers International Band off their 1978 release Isi Buka Ani Eric

There was no information on the sleeve or the record about the band or where they were based, but the music is definitely Ibo highlife. The playing is pretty much flawless. What real stands out for me is the vocals and raucous guitar playing. . Its hard to describe what makes it so special, but once you listen to it I think you will know what I mean. For me the vocals are a great example of the depth, warmth and range of sound these singers were capable of. The fluidity and soulfulness cadence of the vocals are accompanied by some screaming guitar riffs. The seller aptly described the music as the Ibo highlife equivalent of musical heroin. I've been listening to it nonstop
For the next selection on the highlife turntable I have selected the track Abraham by O.P.K off a Pan American release O.P.K is back again.

Recorded at Ambassador records in Ghana there is no information on the liner notes about the performers except a note that all tunes were written by O.P.K and F.K. Part of me wants to believe that F.K. is F. Kenya, but I have no way of knowing although the lead vocalist does sound like him.

The medley takes up all of side 1. The vocals are sharp and are carried along by a guitar rhythm has that laid back psychedelic Ghanaian back beat that was the hallmark of all the great Ghanaian bands of the late 70's. I was also grooving on the nice percussion work in the background. I've been playing it alot lately. I hope you like it.
Let me know if you can identify who F.K. and O.P.K.

There was no information on the liner notes about the band, but they sing in Igbo. The rough translation of the song title is truth is the husband/father. The two things that really stood out for me were the vocals and the horn playing. Check out the horn riffs at the beginning, at the 4:30 mark and towards the end. Classic stuff. I hope you like.
For the next selection on the Highlife Turntable I have selected the track Odindo Kua Enwe by the Akashiada International Band led by Pat Enebeli off a 1982 release entitled Charity Special.

I do not know much about the Akashiada International Band but the Umu-Akashiada is a sub group of the Ukwauni people in the Ndokwa land. Akashiada records appears to be a label that was active in the early 80's. Pat Enebeli went on to become the lead singer for one of my favorite Ukwauni bands Obiajulu and his Sound Power of Africa.

The Ukwauni song is minimalist in structure and focuses on the thready guitar rhythms supporting the lilting vocals of Pat Enebeli. I really like the way the guitarist bends the notes and the chorus hovers in the background occasionally joining the lead vocalist. I think the simplicity of the song is what I find most attractive. I have been listening to it a lot lately and thought I'd share it to see what you think.

I hope you like it.
For the next selection on the highlife turntable, I have selected the track Oh Chukwu Nna by the Amaica Brothers Band led by John Okpor off an O.E.I. Records release.

I've written about John Okpor before. John Okpor was one of the great Ukwauni vocalists and appears to have had a long and varied career. I've never heard of the Amaica Brothers Band or this label before I came across this record.

This song appears to be a reworking of the Igbo gospel song Chukwa Nna Mu. Chukwu in Igbo culture is the source of all the other Igbo gods and controls everything on earth and the spiritual world. Nna is another word for Fathers. The song sounds like a praise song to the creator and father: Chukwu. The label says the song is a Ukwauni Continental Highlife.

The three things that stand out for me are the beauty of the vocals, the simplicity of the guitar lines and the way the percussion instruments keep the tempo moving. A beautiful little song.

I hope you like it
For the next selection on the Highlife Turntable I have selected the track Onwu Egbuchula Nnem by Chukwuemeka Madukwem and the Big Seven.

I do not know anything about the performer, but the song is off a 1979 Jicco Records Release. The tune is pretty simple, but the vocals and horn solos give the song a nice laid back quality. Nothing fancy, but clean and straightforward. I've been listening to the song the last couple of weeks and thought I'd share it. I hope you like it.

Let me know if you know anything about the performer or the style of music.

Thanks.
